How can you discover your spiritual gifts?

Morning Y'all! I pray this post encourages you and gives God glory! Got suggested topics you want me to write about? Please comment below or email me at info@mocatoday.com.

Wrapping up the Spiritual Gifts series this week, I would like to expand on how you can discover your spiritual gifts and define each spiritual gift from a biblical perspective in today's blog post.

Reminder— Spiritual gifts are supernatural gifts, sourced by the Holy Spirit, every believer is given when they receive the gift of salvation. Just as the gift of salvation is by grace through faith, so are spiritual gifts.

How can you discover what your spiritual gifts are?

There are at least three helpful tips to discover your spiritual gifts:

  • Know Jesus. God is the source and creator of spiritual gifts. Therefore, you must know Him and allow the Holy Spirit to indwell in you to reveal your spiritual gifts over time. You can know God by having a growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ that includes an active prayer life, choosing to walk by the Holy Spirit, regular Bible study, serving, and a genuine pursuit to mature as a Christ ambassador.

  • Be humble. We already know God hates pride and loves humility (Proverbs 3:34, 8:13, 11:2). Humility leads to all credit given to God, total reliance on God, and repentance. Repentance leads to a changed life that pleases God, fosters peace, joy, and a soft heart able and willing to do the work God assigns you using the unique spiritual gifts He has blessed you with.

Likewise, you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." ~Proverbs 5:5-6 (NKJV)
  • Trial and error. Sometimes, it takes trying various things for the Kingdom God that ultimately guides your path to discovering your spiritual gifts. This requires "getting off the bench to get in the game" of Christ discipleship and allow God to use you to edify and build up the Body of Christ (The Church), serve others, and honor (or glorify) Him.

Spiritual gifts definitions:

  • Apostle: A person sent to new places with the gospel. You may have heard of missionaries going to different countries to help spread the Word; they could be described as apostles. An apostle can also provide leadership to other churches or ministries and offer advice on spiritual matters.

  • Discernment (discerning of spirits): The wisdom to recognize truth from untruth by correctly evaluating whether a behavior or teaching is from God, satan, or another ungodly source in a given situation.

  • Encourager (exhorter): Competence in offering encouragement, comfort, and support to help someone be all that God wants them to be.

  • Evangelist: The ability to successfully communicate the message of the gospel, especially to nonbelievers.

  • Faith: People with this gift have such great confidence in the power and promises of God that they can stand strong in their belief, no matter what may try to shake them. They can also stand up for The Church and for their faith in such a way as to defend and move it forward.

  • Giver: Those who have this gift are particularly willing and able to share what resources they have with pleasure, and without the need to see them returned.

  • Healer: A capability used by God to restore others; be that physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually.

  • Helper/Administrator: The ability to help steer the church, or a ministry, toward the successful completion of God-given goals, with skills in planning, organization, and supervision. Someone with this gift is able to support or assist members of the Body of Christ so that they may be free to minister to others.

  • Hospitality: A natural ability to make people—even strangers—feel welcome in one’s own home or church as a means to disciple or serve them.

  • Leader: This gift marks a person who is able to stand before a church, to direct The Body of Christ with care and attention, and to motivate them toward achieving the church’s goals. It is the teaching elder, person who shepherds and oversees a local congregation of believers in Jesus Christ.

  • Mercy (mercy-giver): This is the defining trait of a person with great sensitivity for those who are suffering. It manifests itself in offering compassion and encouragement, and in a love for giving practical help to someone in need.

  • Organizer: Leads others to get a project done. Able to solve problems and accomplish tasks through analysis and delegation.

  • Prophet: The ability to speak the message of God to others. This sometimes involves foresight or visions of what is to come. This skill should be used only to offer encouragement or warning.

  • Server: A talent for identifying tasks needed for the Body of Christ and using available resources to get the job done.

  • Speaking in different kinds of tongues: Supernatural ability to speak in another language (one that has not been learned).

  • Teacher: The skill to teach from the Bible and communicate it effectively for the understanding and spiritual growth of others.

  • Tongue Interpreter: Supernatural ability to understand the tongue language and translate it.

  • Word of knowledge: This is the gift of someone who actively pursues knowledge of the Bible. This person may also enjoy analyzing biblical data. Supernatural revelation of facts past, present, or future which were not learned through the efforts of the natural mind.

  • Word of wisdom: A right application of knowledge. The gift of being able to sort through facts and data to discover what needs to be done for the church.

  • Working of miracles: Instantaneous and divine energizing of supernatural power upon a believer enabling him to accomplish something which by the laws of nature would be impossible (Hassell).
